Christmas in Mexico
Christmas (Navidad) is a very important season in Mexico, full of many typical traditions, a mixture of remnants from the pre-Hispanic period and Spanish traditions. People feel that the season begins on December 12 with the celebrations related to the Virgin de Guadalupe and ends with the celebration of the arrival of the Three Wise Men on January 6th, for which a specific cake is baked.
There are posadas (nine days of religious observance), pastorals (plays that recreate the biblical passage), villancicos (specific songs), piñatas, and of course the set up of poinsettias, that in Spanish are called Noche Buenas (meaning Christmas Eve). Part of our tradition is to set up nativities, generally by December 12 and left on display even until February 2.
