In the navel of the moon

Mexico is a mystical and powerful word. It is the echo of cultures and civilizations that populated and dominated these lands. It is the dream of the destiny of a moving universe. It is history and passion. Multiplicity of faces and horizons, enigmatic voice that only we can pronounce with the heart.

The name of Mexico has been in constant movement with the coming and going of history and comes from an aboriginal language of America, like those of Canada, Nicaragua, Peru, Uruguay and Chile, unlike Argentina, Brazil, Venezuela, Colombia or Bolivia, which are of European origin.

Its meaning is complex, since there are more than seventy etymologies proposed and have different meanings and senses in the various indigenous languages.

Gutierre Tibon, in “History of the name and of the foundation of Mexico”, makes a detailed study of the different versions and affirms that amongst all these, those that have moons, navels, centers, hares, rabbits and magueyes among their elements, correspond to a correct interpretation.

Thus, we find different proposals, such as "place in the navel of the maguey", "in the hell of the maguey", "cosmic maguey", "place of hares running between maguey", "center of the pulque region", "center of the spring ","place of nobles", "city of the moon", "face of the moon", " the city that emerges from the water".

In the different indigenous languages there are meanings as diverse as "place of hard colored tunas", of the Nahuatl Tenochtitlan; "In the middle of the moon", of the Otomi madetzana; "Place of the navel of the moon", of the Mixteco ñuucohoyoo; "Place of the eagle and the snake", of the Cuicateco ñacuyaa; "Navel of the world", of the Tlapaneco mishi; "In the navel of the moon", of the Nahuatl metzicco .

"In the navel of the moon" is the most accepted meaning, it derives from metztli, moon, xictli, navel, and locative co.

The second part of the name of Mexico Tenochtitlan comes from tetl, stone, and nochitli, tuna. Its symbol, the prickly pear tree on a stone, has the form of a double human heart, representing the heart of the world.

But beyond the study of indigenous languages and etymologies, the name of Mexico has cosmological implications. The navel of the moon is the point where the vital force of the universe converges and where all the worlds are found, namely: the celestial, the underworld and the terrestrial. Mexico Tenochtitlan is the double center, earthly and cosmic, predestined as the Great Dwelling of men and gods.

Mexico is a word and a people that represents the eternal geometry in which all things are ordered, the living center beyond time and space, expanding love towards all regions of the universe. There will be a moment in history in which the gods speak and everything is dream in the navel of the moon.
